Alexander Campbell (1788 – 1866) was one of the principal leaders of the Restoration Movement of the nineteenth century. He was born in Northern Ireland and was the son of Thomas Campbell, who was himself one of the early leaders of what eventually became the Restoration Movement. It was Alexander’s father, Thomas Campbell, who wrote the “Declaration and Address” in 1809 that helped to give birth to this new movement. Like most of the Protestants in Northern Ireland, Alexander Campbell was of Scots-Irish ancestry. In 1807, when Alexander was 18, his father, Thomas Campbell, moved to the United States to serve as a Presbyterian minister there.
