Underthemicroscope.com: Home - Under the MicroscopeRead stories for, by and about girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Find news, tips, interviews and profiles, or submit your own story. The best stories will be considered for a survival guide for young women in science. Under the Microscope is the website of Women Writing Science, a project initiated by The Feminist Press at the City University of New York and funded by the National Science Foundation. Women Writing Science seeks to celebrate the achievements of women while frankly discussing the challenges they face., Every November 11 in the U.S., we honor America's veterans for their patriotism, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. As we take this day to salute our current and former troops, we at Under the Microscope want to acknowledge the work of those women, both in the military and as civilians, who are involved in military science. But what exactly is military science?, This October Under the Microscope asked readers What do you think of pop culture portrayals of female scientists? and 20 people participated. Some depictions are positive and some are negative. according to the answer choice of 8 individuals (40%), the largest group. The second most popular response was Theyre amusing but not realistic. selected by 5 participants (25%). The suggestion, Theyre offensive stereotypes. received 3 votes (15%) from respondents. As many people indicated They're accurate and encouraging. as Theyre irrelevant. with 2 bids each (10%)., The connections between art and science are on display in film festivals, popular books, and art contests, to list just a few examples. But where exactly do women fit into this emerging interdisciplinary field of art meeting science?
To investigate, I looked at the number of women and men involved in three events that explore these connections. Of the 15 articles in National Public Radios 2004-05 series Where Science Meets Art, 8 articles prominently feature men, and only 2 feature women (20%)., In conjunction with Novembers Grant My Wish event where we at Under the Microscope ask women to write a fictional grant proposal for their dream research project, we have compiled a list of real grants for women in STEM. These include grants for individuals to complete their research, return to their careers, or travel to conferences, as well as opportunities for organizations, societies, and institutions to institute programs that will encourage education and careers in STEM. Feel free to add a comment if you know of a great grant we overlooked., Andrea Ghez is an astrophysicist at the University of California in Los Angeles who develops techniques to allow us to see more clearly from ground-based telescopes. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston in 1987 she got her Ph.D. at the California Technical Institute in Pasadena.
After doing a Hubble Fellowship in Arizona she took a job at UCLA, where she has been for the last 15 years. Ghez spoke with Under The Microscope about her work, her life, and her advice to girls interested in STEM.
