Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Upcoming Exhibition, Current Exhibition, Events, mediums include photography, video, sculpture, and painting, James Drake, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art wishes to announce the opening of the major solo-exhibition: A Thousand Tongues Burn and Sing by James Drake The exhibition will open Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 7-10 pm, with refreshments and music. James Drake’s videos, drawings, sculptures, poetry, and installations reflect his understanding of Man’s place in nature and the presumptions and the psychological struggle that often result in tragedy. In his works of art, James Drake’s personal journey across the harsh desert of self-reflection reveals the starkness of the political and social unrest afflicting Man. The Trophy Room installation powerfully expresses that violence is symptomatic of the duality between animality and humanity. The series Exit Juarez addresses Drake’s concern over the hardships and violence in the border towns of El Paso and Juarez. Included in the exhibition are two charcoal drawings titled A Thousand Tongues Burn and Sing dealing with language, that is, the ability it possesses to both separate and unify. Born in Lubbock, Texas in 1946, James Drake spent his early years in Guatemala, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has been included in many exhibitions, both solo and group, most notably the Whitney Biennial 2000, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the 52nd International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy in 2007. The work of James Drake will be on view October 16, 2010 through January 9, 2011. The Station Museum of Contemporary Art is located in Midtown on the corner of Alabama and La Branch. Please call to schedule tours: 713.529.6900 This exhibition presents the work of 10 distinguished artists who are dealing with issues regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual civil rights. Fundamental concerns include gay marriage, the AIDS crisis, religious and legislative persecution, hate crimes and gay sexuality. Gay marriage is a controversial issue and a subject that Brooklyn based artist Patricia Cronin personally confronts through her well-known classically sculpted funerary monument Memorial To A Marriage. She also presents her intimate series of erotic watercolors. The AIDS crisis devastated the gay community beginning in the 1980s. Outspoken artists affected by this disease explored its effects in their artwork. One of the most influential figures of this time was New York based artists David Wojnarowicz. His “Untitled” (One Day this Kid...) reveals an intimate narrative that shows how devastating this disease is. More recently, Daniel Goldstein’s Medicine Man approaches AIDS on conceptual level. The suspended human- shaped sculpture consists of steel wire threaded with nearly 300 donated empty HIV medication bottles and 139 syringes. The sculpture is beautiful in spite of its foundation in hopelessness and despair. Arthur Robinson Williams presents intimate portraits of transgendered individuals and couples undergoing physical and emotional transformation in his photographic series My Right Self. Zanele Muholi takes us on a photographic journey through post-apartheid South Africa focusing on the subjective experiences of black lesbians in two of her series Only Half The Picture and Being. This exhibition consists of a range of media including sculpture, photography, video, and mixed media. Coinciding with Houston’s Annual Pride Festival, this exhibition shares aesthetic, philosophical, and political views and experiences from a legitimate segment of society. This exhibition will be on view on view from June 19, 2010 through September 19, 2010. This exhibition was curated by Tim Gonzalez with the help of the staff of the Station Museum.
