Theatre Victoria follows a valued theatrical tradition and is proud to be the resident company at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts. From 1955 through 1969, Victoria Civic Theatre performed at various Victoria locations. Following a fire, which destroyed their equipment and properties, they disbanded. In 1973, interested actors and students met to form University Civic Theatre, which operated until UHV discontinued its fine arts department. Theatre Victoria, Inc. was founded in 1977. A non-for-profit, tax-exempt organization, its mission is to support an educational environment for instruction in acting and stagecraft, offer a variety of live performances for volunteers to participate and polish their skills, provide an opportunity for all to view and experience the thrill and enjoyment of live theatre. VCT has grown from a handful of participants, who stored their properties in borrowed garages and performed only a few times a year, to a core of 150 active volunteers presenting six productions a year, filling 15,000 seats, performing at least 60 evenings annually. Sponsors a Theatrical Academy for Youth, which involves over 50 children each year.
