The pilot project MATURE - Supporting Employers In Recruiting And Selecting Mature Aged Persons responds to the low level of labour market participation of elderly employees in most of the European member states in general and to the existing structural barriers to be found in enterprises recruitment policies in particular. Elder employees are discriminated through ageist stereotypes and practices when it comes to the selection and recruitment of new employees. Applicants will be excluded from the recruitment process because they are considered to be too old to do a certain job. Qualifications and competencies are regarded as of subordinate relevance. To raise labour market participation of elder people (55-64), barrier free recruitment procedures are indispensable. The European Framework Directive refers to age-discrimination and obliges the member states to implement legal action against it. But legal initiatives only are not sufficient to change attitudes of decision makers in enterprises and consultancies to ban age discrimination in recruitment procedures.
