Originally known as Culverwell, the railroad town was renamed “Calientes,” the Spanish word for hot, in 1901 after hot springs were discovered in a cave tucked at the base of the surrounding mountains. <br><br>Evidence of the town’s proud railroad past can be found in its mission-style railroad station, now home to city offices, a library and an art gallery, and in the charming string of “company row” houses situated northeast of downtown Caliente.
