The "True Aliveness" website encourages people to transform their lives to new levels of aliveness, energy, feeling, passion and love that they never dreamed possible by facing their painful feelings about their eventual death while still in the prime of life. It explains how the denial of death we learn as children deadens us to life as adults and, eventually, kills us sooner than necessary. It describes how the unconscious death anxiety we all carry within us can be transformed into appreciation for the preciousness of life. It also explains why bringing the issue of our mortality out of the closet may well be key to saving the human species from increasing violence and species suicide as we continue to destroy the biosphere upon which future generations will depend for life itself. It urges each visitor to undertake the psychological, social and political, and spiritual journeys necessary to realize their full potential for aliveness. The website urges setting a goal of being "alive" rather than "happy", and focuses on the importance of sadness, and the process involved in facing death: (1) becoming aware of the largely unconscious emotional pain we all feel at the prospect of eventually disappearing; (2) daring to feel our pain as fully as possible; (3) most importantly, TRANSFORMING that pain into appreciation for life. It recommends that people develop such a process as a daily or even hourly practice, resolving to appreciate each moment of life as much as possible. It suggests that a mature spiritual practice sees us feel our pain and then uses it as energy to achieve periods of spiritual transcendence. It also suggests that a spirituality that does not periodically feel deep sadness at the prospect of death may be a sophisticated form of denial of death.
