For over 25 years Vipassana Hawai’i has been providing mindfulness meditation in the Theravada Buddhist tradition throughout Hawai’i, North America, Southeast Asia and more. Guided by the Buddha’s teachings on generosity or dana in the traditional Pali language, Steven Smith, Michele McDonald co-founded the organization that now encompasses multiple teachers with a range of expertise in vipassana insight meditation, metta practice, abhidhamma and general dharma studies. The building of the Hawai’i Insight Meditation Center (HIMC) on the North Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i will be the culmination of their vision to establish a legacy of the Buddha’s teachings in Hawai’i. Of the many humanitarian projects that Vipassana Hawai’i runs the Mettadana Project in Burma and Thailand has been instrumental in supporting health and educational opportunities to local children, nuns, and migrant Burmese workers.

Vipassana means insight into the true nature of reality. Vipassana meditation uses mindfulness to eliminate pain, attain happiness and see life clearly.
